Use the Pause to Reflect, Assess, or Reset

With all the roles you play in a day, as a family member, friend or coworker, sometimes you may find yourself not getting acknowledged in a conversation. When others dominate and do all the talking, it's usually because they are consumed with their situation or story and you're never able to participate.

In times when this is frustrating, I have tried staying still, sitting quietly with a small smile. Using the pause as a tool has given me the patience to tamp down my ego and simply listen.

Try This: Use the Pause to Reflect, Assess, or Reset

If you get caught in a one-sided conversation, before you get disappointed, consider a new challenge. This week, use the pause to see why it's a great tool:

  • Be Still. Start with not moving your body as you sit or stand with the other person.
  • Take a Deep Breath. The use of your breath is to relax and quiet your energy.
  • Use Your Eyes. While practicing stillness, follow the conversation with your gaze.
  • Embrace the Pause. Take a moment to let the other person talk while you reflect, assess, or reset.

A wonderful advantage of using the "pause," is the chance to be peaceful and attentive while building a new behavior of being still and joyful in every conversation!
