Trying to finish some large projects this past week, any distraction started to increase my stress level. Have you noticed that when someone interrupts to show you the latest YouTube or TikTok video, it's hard to get back on track?
Recently an article from UC Berkeley's People & Culture mentioned, "The impact of interruptions cannot be overstated. The length of our recovery time depends on the complexity of our task; ranging anywhere from 8 minutes for simpler tasks to 25 minutes for more complex ones." * For many writers, Pomodoro is the key. It's a timer-based technique to focus on one project for a certain number of minutes.
Try This: Stressed? Try the The 25-Minute Reset
It has been shown that the Pomodoro technique helps a person recover from a distraction to get back on track and improve focus. So, here is the simple technique:
- Choose one task or project you want to focus on.
- Set a kitchen timer for 25 minutes.
- Work on the project until the timer rings.
- Take a short break of 5 minutes.
- Repeat until you're calmer and back in flow.
This week, my "fix" will by using the timer given to me by writer buddy, Toni N. for 25-minute Pomodoro sessions. I know it will reduce my stress and enhance my creativity during a crazy week ahead.
