Recently, when celebrating another birthday, it meant so much for my girlfriends and family to surprise me with fun little things that were so thoughtful! It reminded me about how it's little things that can make us smile.
While all the many gifties were awesome, one gift that my friend, Sandy W., gave me came with the comment that her hubby, Mark, had come up with the idea - a fun, colorful framed "BELIEVE" for my collection! How fun to have good friends that can come up with just the perfect little touch. And, among the cute gifts from my daughter, Amanda, was a carved wooden "Thankful" that found a perfect place on an end table.
The smiles that the gifts gave me fit this quote from Robert Brault, "Enjoy the little things in life because one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." * This made me realize how key it is to appreciate experiences like these. So read on for my idea.
Try this: Enjoy the little things!
The key is how to notice more of these little things in a busy life. Even if you’re not super booked up and have some chill time, it’s key to watch for those moments, those simple times that made you smile. Here’s the idea:
- Key is to document your new habit of noticing the little things. So, pull up your calendar online or grab a paper one for this week.
- The challenge is to find one little thing that made you smile each day. By next Sunday, jot down 5 items or experiences.
- Try to find one each of these from a friend or family member:
- An email that made you smile
- A text that made you grin.
- A compliment you received.
- An experience with a friend like sharing a meal.
- A phone call that made your day.
- Finally, send along one of these delightful little things to 5 friends or family members. Document these on your calendar, too!
If not all of these works for your week, then consider the sunshine on your face when you walked outside or finding a coin in a parking lot or holding the door for another person. Remember, it’s all about the little things!
