Funny how as we get older, conversations during lunch or dinner with friends often move to aging issues of aches, pains, illnesses, and surgeries. Sometimes I leave saddened because there was a focus on negative issues of health rather than fun adventures.
Maybe you have heard the adage, "Every day in every way, I'm getting better and better." The phrase is attributed to Émile Coué, a pharmacist who developed the psychological technique of autosuggestion in the early 20th century. *
Reading that simple statement got me thinking about ways to refocus my own thoughts to avoid the aches and pains trap.
Try this: Every Day in Every Way
To bolster your positive outlook and keep from concentrating on the wrong things, there is a very easy way to shift your mindset. Here is an idea for you this week:
- Use Coué's phrase as a mantra, positive words that help increase belief in ourselves and reframe your mindset away from negative thoughts. Or choose a phrase that is soothing.
- Every morning this week, say your mantra into the mirror. Adding a smile helps to boost a good emotional state.
- After a week of practicing your mantra, watch for changes in your attitude, your mindset and your approach to health in conversations with others.
While this is a simple technique, it can be very effective. And I even enjoy making silly faces in the mirror when I say my mantra.
