Recently, a friend of mine was talking about how great it will be to retire. When asked if she had a dream to pursue with her new free time, she simply shook her head. This reaction has happened several times with my friends about a life dream.
This quote by former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, has always made me smile, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."*
Often, it seems that people have given up on dreams or big goals as life takes twists and turns. Or, like my dad who had wanted to be a pilot in WWII, but he was not picked. When I saved up after college and offered to pay for him to take flight lessons, he said the dream had passed. I was crushed and vowed not to give up on my own dreams - even as I aged.
While envisioning your dream is the first step towards turning it into reality, sometimes it still seems too hard to achieve.
Try This: Step into the Beauty of a Dream
Start with something you would love to do - a fun dream or life goal, or simply something you wanted to do for a long time. To help you get motivated, here is a quick exercise from author, Lyn Robinson**: Imagine being in the moment of achieving your dream or goal with answers to:
- Who is with you?
- What are you wearing?
- Are you excited?
- Are you full of energy?
The answers start to create a story that will illuminate your mind and give you inspiration to take steps to achieve that dream or goal. It helps me to move forward when I start to doubt being able to achieve my own.
